Herbal Teas According to Traditional Persian Medicine
For centuries, Persians have used the natural healing powers of herbs to create Damnoosh chai (herbal tea) to maintain their temperament and restore any humoral imbalances within the body. Medicinal properties derived naturally from plants can come from many different elements, including leaves, roots, bark, fruit, seeds, skin, stems and flowers. In TPM medicinal and spiritual use, any parts of the plant might be considered ‘herbs’. The different parts of plants can contain various active ingredients that, when blended together, help nourish and heal the body.
TPM approaches the therapeutic use of herbal teas through the science of energetics and values the healing properties of herbs and fruits according to their elements, their effects on and after digestion (i.e. absorption) and their heating or cooling qualities for the body. Spicy and bitter herbs, such as cinnamon, ginger and cumin, are lighter and provide a heating quality that speeds up the metabolism, helping to regulate the yellow bile and blood humours, while sour and sweet herbs, such as coriander and red clover, are heavier and have the opposite cooling effect, slowing down the metabolism and helping to regulate the phlegmatic and black bile humours.
