Herbal Teas According to Traditional Persian Medicine

For centuries, Persians have used the natural healing powers of herbs to create Damnoosh chai (herbal tea) to maintain their temperament and restore any humoral imbalances within the body. Medicinal properties derived naturally from plants can come from many different elements, including leaves, roots, bark, fruit, seeds, skin, stems and flowers. In TPM medicinal and spiritual use, any parts of the plant might be considered ‘herbs’. The different parts of plants can contain various active ingredients that, when blended together, help nourish and heal the body.

TPM approaches the therapeutic use of herbal teas through the science of energetics and values the healing properties of herbs and fruits according to their elements, their effects on and after digestion (i.e. absorption) and their heating or cooling qualities for the body. Spicy and bitter herbs, such as cinnamon, ginger and cumin, are lighter and provide a heating quality that speeds up the metabolism, helping to regulate the yellow bile and blood humours, while sour and sweet herbs, such as coriander and red clover, are heavier and have the opposite cooling effect, slowing down the metabolism and helping to regulate the phlegmatic and black bile humours.

The Power of Herbs

Traditional Persian Medicine celebrates light as life, which is why plants are such a vital part of this natural healing practice. TPM teaches us that essential energy production takes place during the process of photosynthesis as plants draw nutrient-enriching light from the sun through their leaves. We then benefit from this process by imbibing these important nutrients in our herbal teas.

Herbs are essential: they strengthen and support weak tissue and are naturally occurring sources of nutrition in the form of vitamins, minerals and enzymes that, when combined properly, can have a deeply healing effect on the body.

Taste and Emotions

A herb’s taste is not incidental but directly responsible for much of its therapeutic value. Taste directly affects our nervous system through our breath (our life force) in the mouth, which is connected to the brain, and it is the heat of our breath that helps stimulate the gastric nerves and enhances the power of digestion, which is fundamental to our health.

According to Traditional Persian Medicine, there are six main tastes, and each has a corresponding emotion. Much like the food we eat, our emotions affect the body, according to their qualities of heat and moisture. Therefore, how we manage our emotions is just as important as how we manage our diet. The holistic mind, body and spirit science of TPM allows us to use herbs to restore imbalance from both a physiological and psychological perspective. Eating the right foods and drinks in the right amounts, at the right time, in the right way is vital for keeping our humours in balance and for our overall health.

There are bitter emotions, such as grief, or astringent emotions, such as fear, that aggravate those most who have a Melancholic temperament. There are sour emotions, such as envy, or pungent emotions, such as anger, that aggravate the more fiery Choleric temperament. The sweet emotions, such as desire, or salty emotions, such as greed, are believed to aggravate the Phlegmatic.

The Six Tastes and Their Corresponding Quality and Temperament

Each taste group has a different balancing physiological effect.

Taste  Temperament – Quality
Salty  Hot and moist
Insipid (bland, tasteless) Cold and moist
Pungent (spice, hot)           Hot and dry
Sweet Moist and hot
Sour  Cold and dry
Bitter  Dry and hot
