Summer Skin Detox: A Traditional Persian Medicine Guide to Clearer, Calmer Skin

Summer has only just arrived and my skin is already reminding me who's in charge.

Every year I promise myself I'll stay on top of things. I'll drink more water, get enough sleep, keep my skincare routine simple and avoid relying on makeup when life gets busy. Then, before I know it, summer arrives with its warm weather, longer evenings and packed diary. Within a few weeks, I start noticing familiar changes. My pores look more congested, my skin feels heavier and my complexion loses some of the brightness it had in spring.

Years ago, I would have blamed my skincare products. I would have searched for a stronger cleanser, a harsher exfoliator or another product promising quick results. These days, I see things differently.

One of the reasons I fell in love with Traditional Persian Medicine is that it encourages us to look at the whole picture. Instead of focusing only on the skin, it asks us to consider the season, our temperament, our diet, our sleep, our emotional wellbeing and the environment around us. It recognises that healthy skin isn't created by products alone.

Growing up in a Persian family, beauty was never separated from health. My mother and grandmother didn't have complicated skincare routines. They paid attention to what they ate, how they slept, the season they were in and how their bodies responded to those changes. Looking back, I realise they were following principles that modern wellness culture is only just beginning to appreciate.

As someone with a Choleric temperament, summer has always been the season that requires the most awareness. Traditional Persian Medicine describes summer as naturally hot and dry. Choleric individuals already tend towards those qualities, which means summer can amplify them. When I ignore this, my skin is usually the first place I notice it.

This is why I see the beginning of summer as the perfect time for a skin detox.

Not a crash detox.

Not a juice cleanse.

Not an expensive wellness trend.

A genuine reset that supports healthy skin from both the inside and outside.

Why Summer Affects Your Skin

Many people notice changes in their skin during summer but don't always understand why.

Warmer temperatures increase perspiration. We spend more time outdoors. We often wear more sunscreen and makeup. Travel, social events and disrupted routines can all play a role. The result is often skin that feels more congested, oily or unbalanced.

Traditional Persian Medicine takes this a step further by recognising that seasons influence the body. Summer introduces more heat into our environment and that can affect everything from digestion to sleep quality and, ultimately, the appearance of our skin.

For those of us with a Choleric temperament, this can be particularly noticeable. I often find that if I've been eating poorly, sleeping less and rushing around, my skin tells the story before any other part of my body does.

My pores become more visible. My skin feels less comfortable. Makeup doesn't sit as well as it should. It's my body's way of telling me to pay attention.

What Does a Skin Detox Actually Mean?

The word detox has become one of the most overused terms in the wellness industry.

Many companies use it to sell products that promise dramatic transformations. Traditional Persian Medicine takes a much more balanced approach.

The body already has systems designed to remove waste products. The liver, digestive system, kidneys, lungs and skin all play important roles. The goal isn't to force detoxification. The goal is to support the body's natural ability to function efficiently.

When those systems are struggling, your skin may begin to reflect it.

You might notice:

  • Congested pores
  • Dull-looking skin
  • Excess oil
  • Breakouts
  • Dry patches
  • Sensitivity
  • Lack of radiance

For me, clogged pores are often the first sign that I need to make a few adjustments.

The Traditional Persian Medicine Approach to Summer Skin

One of the things I appreciate most about Traditional Persian Medicine is that it doesn't believe there is a single skincare routine that works for everyone.

Modern beauty tends to categorise people into skin types. Traditional Persian Medicine takes a more personalised approach.

It considers:

  • Your temperament
  • Your age
  • The season
  • Your digestion
  • Your emotional wellbeing
  • Your sleep quality
  • Your environment

Your skin isn't static.

The routine that serves you in January may not be the routine that serves you in July.

This is one reason I encourage people to learn about their temperament. Understanding your natural tendencies helps you make more informed decisions about skincare, diet and lifestyle.

My Summer Skin Detox Routine

Rather than adding more products during summer, I actually focus on simplifying things.

The Six Persian Lifestyle Principles provide a useful framework because they remind me that skincare extends far beyond what I put on my face.

Nourishment: Supporting Skin Through Food

One of the biggest misconceptions in skincare is that healthy skin can be achieved entirely through topical products.

Your skin is constantly being influenced by what you eat.

During summer, I naturally gravitate towards foods that feel lighter and more refreshing. I eat more seasonal fruit, salads, herbs and vegetables. Watermelon, cucumber, berries, pomegranate and leafy greens all find their way onto my plate more often.

I also become more mindful of foods that leave me feeling overheated or sluggish. For me, too much sugar, heavily processed food and frequent takeaways usually show up on my skin sooner or later.

Healthy skin starts in the kitchen long before it starts in the bathroom.

Hydration Matters More Than You Think

Many people associate oily skin with hydrated skin.

They're not the same thing.

Your skin can be producing excess oil while still lacking adequate hydration. This is something I notice regularly during summer.

Rather than obsessing over water targets, I focus on drinking consistently throughout the day and paying attention to how I feel.

Hydration supports circulation, skin function and overall wellbeing. Sometimes the simplest habits are the most powerful.

Herbal Support for Skin Health

One ritual I genuinely enjoy is starting my day with Damnoosh™ Skin Radiance Tea Tonic.

I originally developed this blend because I wanted something that complemented a holistic approach to beauty. The ingredients include Green Tea, Rose and Dandelion, all of which have a long history of use in traditional wellness practices.

For me, drinking herbal tea isn't about finding a miracle solution. It's about creating small daily habits that support the body over time.

Consistency is often far more valuable than intensity.

Exfoliation the Persian Way

One thing I've learned over the years is that aggressive exfoliation rarely improves my skin.

In fact, it often makes things worse.

Many modern scrubs leave the skin feeling stripped and irritated. Traditional Persian beauty rituals take a gentler approach.

One of the reasons I introduced Sefidab® to the UK was because I wanted to share a Persian beauty ritual that had been valued for generations.

The Sefidab® Face Detox Peel Powder combines ingredients including Rice, Rose, Aloe Vera and Persian Blue Salt to gently exfoliate and refresh the skin. It helps remove dead skin cells and surface build-up without leaving the skin feeling compromised.

For the body, I use the Sefidab® Body Detox Peel Powder. During summer, this becomes particularly useful for areas prone to congestion, dryness or rough texture.

One thing many people overlook is that skincare products work better when dead skin cells are removed regularly. Proper exfoliation allows serums, moisturisers and oils to penetrate more effectively.

Don't Forget the Mind-Skin Connection

Traditional Persian Medicine recognises the relationship between emotional wellbeing and physical health.

Modern research increasingly supports what traditional systems have long observed: stress can influence skin health.

When life becomes hectic, my skin often reflects it.

This is why a summer skin detox isn't just about what I eat or apply to my skin. It's also about protecting my energy, getting enough sleep and making space for activities that help me feel grounded.

Sometimes the most effective skincare routine starts with going to bed earlier.

A Simple Persian-Inspired DIY Skin Detox Mask

If you're looking for a simple treatment to try at home, this is one of my favourite summer masks.

Mix together:

  • 1 tablespoon rose water
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon finely ground oats

Apply to clean skin for around ten minutes before rinsing with lukewarm water.

It's simple, inexpensive and feels wonderfully soothing after a warm summer day.

Common Summer Skin Detox Mistakes

Many people unknowingly make their skin concerns worse during summer.

The most common mistakes I see are:

  • Over-cleansing
  • Over-exfoliating
  • Following social media trends blindly
  • Ignoring nutrition
  • Not drinking enough water
  • Using too many active ingredients at once

Healthy skin usually responds best to consistency rather than constant experimentation.

What I Want You to Take Away

Summer skincare doesn't need to be complicated.

Traditional Persian Medicine reminds us that skin health is influenced by much more than products. The season, your temperament, your diet, your sleep and your emotional wellbeing all play a role.

As a Choleric woman, summer is the season that challenges me most. It's also the season that reminds me to return to the basics. When I focus on nourishing food, good hydration, herbal support, gentle exfoliation and adequate rest, my skin almost always responds positively.

The older I get, the more I realise that beauty isn't about doing more.

It's about doing the right things consistently.
