Why Your Skin Still Looks Dull Despite Using Expensive Skincare
The Persian beauty ritual your routine might be missing
Hundreds. Literally hundreds and hundreds of skincare brands caught my eye while I was shopping in central London at the weekend. Serums, face creams, facial oils, under-eye treatments. Whole shelves dedicated to helping us achieve smoother, fresher, more radiant-looking skin.
I have no doubt that many of these products are well formulated and offer benefits when used correctly. I enjoy discovering good skincare myself. But as I looked around, I kept thinking about how much attention we give to what we put on our skin, compared with how we prepare and care for it.
If you have spent money on skincare but still feel disappointed when you look in the mirror, you will understand what I mean. Your face might feel rough despite moisturising. Your foundation might catch on flaky patches. Perhaps you keep searching for the best serum for dull skin, wondering why the last one hasn’t delivered what you hoped.
Before buying another product, it is worth looking at your routine as a whole. For me, one of the most useful changes was returning to a Persian beauty ritual I knew well: Sefidab.
Why Does My Skin Look Dull Despite Using Skincare?
Dull skin can reflect dryness, a build-up of dead surface cells, irritation or a routine that does not suit your skin. Expensive products cannot guarantee radiance. Gentle cleansing, suitable exfoliation, moisturising and daily sun protection can help improve its appearance without adding more products.
What Does Dull Skin Look Like?
Dull skin is a description rather than a diagnosis. You might use it when your complexion looks less radiant than usual, feels uneven or has patches of roughness and flaking. Sometimes you notice it most when applying make-up, because your foundation sits differently from one area to another.
It can affect dry, oily and combination skin. An oily surface does not necessarily mean that skin feels comfortable or well hydrated, just as a lack of radiance does not automatically mean you need a richer cream.
When I talk about brighter-looking skin, I mean freshness, radiance and a smoother-looking surface. I am never talking about making your natural skin colour lighter.
Clean Skin Is the Starting Point
We often focus on the ingredients in a serum without first thinking about what is already sitting on our skin. Make-up, sunscreen, excess oil and everyday dirt all need attention when we cleanse, particularly at the end of the day.
But cleansing and exfoliating do different jobs. Cleansing removes surface residue. Exfoliation helps remove dead cells from the outermost layer of skin. Your face can feel clean after washing and still have areas of rough texture.
That does not mean every skincare ingredient needs freshly exfoliated skin to work. Some ingredients act at the surface, while others penetrate to varying degrees depending on their formulation. Your skin’s outer layer also has an essential protective role.
The aim is to keep skin clean and comfortable, and address surface roughness gently when appropriate. Scrubbing harder or exfoliating more frequently does not necessarily improve the result.
The Persian Ritual That Changed How I Care for My Skin
When I started using Sefidab regularly, I began giving skin preparation the same attention I gave to the products that followed. Exfoliation became a considered part of my routine, rather than something I remembered only when my skin felt rough.
Sefidab has a long place in Persian bathing and beauty traditions. At The East To West Lifestyle Co.®, I have drawn on that heritage to develop formulations for the face and body that fit into everyday routines.
Sefidab® Face Detox Rice & Rose Skin Peel Powder combines finely milled rice powder, rose and natural minerals in a water-activated powder formula. It gently polishes the skin’s surface, helping remove dead skin cells and leaving skin feeling smoother. The formula is vegan, cruelty-free and dermatologically tested. etwlife.com

For me, the value is also in taking time to notice my skin. How does it feel before I begin? How does it respond afterwards? What does it need next? Those questions help me make better choices than simply adding another product.
A Skincare Routine for Dull Skin, in the Right Order
My routine includes cleansing, occasional exfoliation, a serum and moisturiser. Some days I use additional products, but I do not believe every face needs every step. Each product should have a purpose.
1. Remove Make-up and Sunscreen
In the evening, begin by removing make-up and sunscreen gently. Wearing more make-up means paying attention to cleansing, rather than automatically increasing how often you exfoliate.
2. Add Sefidab® FACE on Your Exfoliation Days
The recommended frequency for Sefidab® FACE is one to two times a week. Activate a small amount with water in wet hands, massage gently onto damp skin and rinse thoroughly. Follow with your regular face cleansing routine, as directed on the product page. etwlife.com
Adapt the frequency to your skin’s response. If it feels sore, tight or irritated, pause rather than pushing through. The American Academy of Dermatology’s guidance on safe exfoliation explains why skin type and existing treatments matter, particularly if you use retinol or products that already cause dryness or peeling. www.aad.org
3. Use Toner if It Suits You
Toner is optional. If you enjoy one and your skin responds well, it can sit after cleansing. If it contains exfoliating acids, consider the exfoliation you are already doing rather than automatically combining both.
4. Apply Your Serum
Choose a serum for a concern you actually want to address. You do not need several simply because they promise different benefits.
One I am enjoying is Kiehl’s Clearly Corrective™ Dark Spot Solution. This is a serum, rather than a facial oil, so it belongs before moisturiser. Kiehl’s application guidance recommends using it after cleansing and toning. www.kiehls.co.uk
5. Moisturise, Then Add Oil if Needed
Follow with a moisturiser that suits your skin. A serum does not automatically replace this step.
Facial oil is an optional addition. Follow the directions for your particular product. Many oils work well after moisturiser in an evening routine, but you do not need one if your skin already feels comfortable.
6. Finish with Sun Protection in the Morning
Use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher as your final morning skincare step before make-up. Daily protection deserves a place in your routine alongside the products you choose for texture and radiance. www.aad.org
Is Expensive Skincare Better?
Developing my own formulations taught me how many decisions sit behind a finished product. Ingredient quality, formulation work, testing, production and standards such as using animal-free ingredients all require thought and investment.
However, a higher price does not automatically mean more effective skincare. It can also reflect packaging, marketing and brand positioning. Nor does a longer list of active ingredients necessarily make a formula better for your skin.
The American Academy of Dermatology’s advice on skincare on a budget confirms that products do not need to be expensive to work. It also explains that using too many products can irritate skin. www.aad.org
I would rather choose a product because it has a clear role in my routine than because its price suggests it must be superior. The useful question is whether the formula, directions and intended purpose fit what my skin needs.
Your Skin and Your Skincare Need Mutual Respect
Like any lasting relationship, caring for your skin takes attention from both sides. We cannot expect a product to do all the work while overlooking how we use it or whether it suits us.
For me, that means cleansing properly, following directions, giving my skin time to respond and resisting the temptation to add several new products at once. It also means recognising when a routine needs adjusting.
Your skin can change with age, hormonal shifts, the seasons and your daily habits. A moisturiser you loved in summer might feel insufficient in winter. A routine that once felt comfortable might become too much when you introduce another active treatment.
Paying attention to those changes is part of skincare. You are caring for the skin you have today, rather than following a fixed routine indefinitely.
Why Temperament Matters in My Persian Approach
Traditional Persian Medicine places temperament, or Mizaj, at the centre of its understanding of individual wellbeing. It describes four temperaments through combinations of heat, cold, moisture and dryness.
My own temperament is Hot and Dry, or Choleric. Learning about that traditional framework encouraged me to pay closer attention to patterns in how I felt, including how my skin responded to my habits and surroundings.
What I value most is the invitation to look at the whole person. The Six Persian Lifestyle Principles encourage reflection on areas such as food and drink, sleep, movement, emotional wellbeing and our environment, rather than concentrating only on what we apply externally.
Mizaj is a traditional framework rather than a dermatological diagnosis. I use it alongside practical attention to my skin type, sensitivity and response to products. It helps me ask questions about my habits without assuming that temperament explains every skin concern.
If you would like to Discover Your Temperament, start with curiosity about yourself. Then use what you observe to make considered choices, rather than copying a routine simply because it works for someone else.
Dull Skin on Your Body Deserves Attention Too
It is easy to give our faces several steps of care while rushing through the rest of our body routine. Yet rough-feeling patches can make body skin feel just as neglected.
Sefidab® Body Detox Calendula & Papaya Skin Peel Powder brings the Persian bathing ritual into weekly body care. Its formulation includes calendula, papaya and Persian Blue Salt, with exfoliation to help remove dead surface cells and smooth the feel of skin.

Use it once a week on wet skin with a wet Kiseh mitt. Create a lather, massage gently and rinse, then finish with your regular body wash and moisturiser. etwlife.com
This is a moment to care for your body with the same attention you give your face. Keep the pressure gentle and let your skin’s response guide you.
Before Buying Another Serum, Review Your Ritual
If your skin still looks dull despite expensive skincare, take a moment to review the steps around those products. Are you removing make-up thoroughly? Is your skin comfortable? Are you addressing roughness gently and keeping it moisturised?
You may find that your routine needs a small adjustment rather than another expensive addition.
For those whose skin suits gentle exfoliation, explore Sefidab® FACE and Sefidab® BODY. Each brings Persian beauty heritage into a practical ritual you can make your own.
That is the approach behind The East To West Lifestyle Co.®: understanding yourself, choosing with care and building habits you can keep.
